Simulation of Damage on Laminates

چکیده
In this paper, we present a recently developed progressive damage model for composites (CPDM) that allows the switching between different damage modes during the numerical process to mimic real physical behaviour. The modelled damage modes are ranging from matrix cracking to fibre breakage or delamination. Moreover, the CPDM is flexible in the sense that provides the basic structure to include variations on the evolution of damage modes whenever appropriate by modifying basic second-order tensors. Ongoing work for potential linkage to the extended finite element method (XFEM) will be also shown. J.L. Curiel Sosa, J.J. Muñoz, S.T. Pinho, Q. Li and O.A. Beg

Buckling of Laminates with Multiple Through-the-Width Delaminations Using Spring Simulation Model
Delamination is one of the most common failure modes in composite structures. In particular, when the laminated composites are subjected to compressive loads, delamination becomes a constraint in the design process. In this study, the system is modeled as a plate supported by an elastic foundation. The elastic adhesive layer between the buckled sublaminates is represented by some parallel sprin...
متن کاملModelling low velocity impact induced damage in composite laminates
The paper presents recent progress on modelling low velocity impact induced damage in fibre reinforced composite laminates. It is important to understand the mechanisms of barely visible impact damage (BVID) and how it affects structural performance. To reduce labour intensive testing, the development of finite element (FE) techniques for simulating impact damage becomes essential and recent ef...
متن کاملThe Effect of Nanoclay on Damaged Areas of Composite and Nanocomposite Laminates
The influence of nanoclay on the impact damage resistance of glass fiber–epoxy composites has been investigated using high-velocity repeated ice impact tests. The incorporation of nanoclay into epoxy enhances the impact resistance of the composites. The impact of ice is a realistic scenario for composite structures such as aircraft fuselages, wing skins and fan blades and it is not a completely...
متن کاملLS-DYNA Impact Simulation of Composite Sandwich Structures with Balsa Wood Core
The impact damage response of balsa core sandwich composite plates with S2-glass/ epoxy reinforced facesheets is evaluated by impacting them with a spherical steel projectile at single impact locations. The impact damage can significantly reduce the structural integrity and load bearing capacity of a composite structure. Under high velocity impact loading, laminated composites experience signif...
متن کاملEnvironmental Effects on Mechanical Properties of Glass/Epoxy and Fiber Metal Laminates, Part I: Hygrothermal Aging
In this article, the effect of hygrothermal aging on mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) and E-glass/epoxy (GE) composites is investigated. First, FML and GE specimens were built using wet lay-up technique under vacuum pressure. Hygrothermal aging simulation was then carried out on both specimen types in distilled water at a constant temperature of 90 °C for 5 weeks. The resul...
متن کاملBallistic Impact on Ceramic/aramid Armour Systems
The ballistic performance of the lightweight armour systems was examined to obtain an estimate for the V50 and the global damage of the composite plates. All estimates were performed by varying the thickness of ceramic tiles, while maintaining equal areal density of the system. Simulation predictions and trial results is demonstrated both in terms of deformation and damage of the laminates and ...
